AUSTIN, Texas, November 3,
2007 /Diverse Arts/ -- New East Arts Gallery is delighted to
present Music, Politics, Fun, an engaging and
thought-provoking selection of art by returning artist David
Zvanut from Commerce, TX. His work includes elaborate
sculptures with colorful glasswork and paintings, many with a
political or social message attached. His sculptures are
particularly notable because they are built of found objects
and materials; glass from a scrap bucket at a local leaded
glass studio; a windshield from a dumpster; a timpani thrown
out by a university music department.
“I like to apply a high degree of finish to the materials
without hiding naturally occurring flaws,” says Zvanut. “My
hope is that viewers will reconsider their attitudes about
people, ideas, and items that tend to be discarded as
defective, useless, or less than pure.” In re-thinking other
people’s trash, he strikes gold, and the results promise to
enchant those who view them.
Zvanut studied under renowned artist and sculptor Karl Umlauf
for over eight years, and graduated from East Texas State
University in 1986 with a Masters in Fine Arts. He continues
to live and work in Commerce, TX. Zvanut’s art has been shown
at the Springfield Museum of Art (Springfield, MO), The Deland
Museum of Art (Deland, FL), and the Northeast Texas Children’s
Museum (Commerce, TX). He has also exhibited work at the
International Festival-Institute at Round Top (TX). Music,
Politics, Fun is Zvanut's second solo exhibit with DiverseArts,
following Imperfect Perfection in 1994.
Meet the artist and enjoy conversation, light refreshments,
and a lovely East End fall night at the opening reception on
November 10, from 7pm to 10pm.
