Celebrated Interior
Designer Creates a Contemporary Cottage in Santa Monica, CA
SANTA MONICA, Nov. 9, 2007 /PRNewswire/ -- When Kathy
Kilbourne bought her first home, a dilapidated two-bedroom
cottage in Santa Monica, California she knew it could be
transformed into the contemporary and stylish home of her
dreams, but she didn't see how. Kathy decided she needed
professional guidance and after interviewing several prominent
Los Angeles interior designers she found her perfect match in
Sarah Barnard Design.
A top executive with Wells Fargo Foothill, Kathy wanted a
place that reflected her playful personality and her love of
the ocean and outdoor sports. To achieve this, owner and
principal interior designer Sarah Barnard implemented a bold
yet welcoming design that incorporated sleek lines and a
prevalent use of Kathy's favorite color, blue.
Sarah and Kathy agreed that every successful woman deserves
her own bathroom. Sarah took a tiny laundry room off the
kitchen, sealed the outside entrance and broke through the
master bedroom wall. She added a wide window over the newly
realized shower to give the bathroom additional light and the
illusion of space. To further customize the room, Sarah
designed a vanity with a blue vessel sink. A stripe of
brilliant blue mosaic offset by pewter stone tiles in shades
of gray completed the transformation of a rescued space into a
luxurious oasis.
Using a range of blues coupled with warm earth tones, Sarah
brought an element of nature into every room. She rearranged
the position of the fixtures in the guest bathroom, gave it a
deep bathtub under the window and finished the walls with
horizontal stripes of glass tiles in golden-beige tones. The
end result is a soft, clean design that hints of golden grass
and sandy shores.
Sarah rejuvenated the dining room with the simple addition of
a sparkly chandelier and low-VOC paint in a gorgeous blue-gray
hue. In the kitchen, she banished the sixties with natural
maple cabinets, stainless steel, energy star appliances, a
floor of giant charcoal porcelain tiles and walls of custom
glass tile mosaic. She even managed to find space for the
washer/dryer in an unobtrusive cabinet at the end of the room.
Working with interior designer Sarah Barnard gave Kathy a
modern home that far surpassed her expectations. Sarah's
vision and skill turned a dated house into a dream-come-true.
