Los Angeles Magazine Selects Phases Africa Among Top LA Home Stores

LOS ANGELES, California, November 7, 2007 /Phases Africa/ -- A passion for the design masterpieces being turned out by the new wave of home furnishing designers in South Africa - and an appreciation for the traditional arts and crafts of African culture…lead to Phases Africa being selected by “Los Angeles Magazine” as one of the cities 40 Top Home Stores. Phases Africa recently joined Beckmann Moore Yaki Studio at the Pacific Design Center, 8687 Melrose Avenue, Suite B-366, West Hollywood. Ca. 90069. Open to the public as well. 310 855 7879

Phases Africa is pleased to present a range of wood furniture made by a Russian sculptor known for his outstanding carving, who is now a resident of South Africa. Like many South African contemporary artists, the sculptor uses his art to forge a new cultural synthesis and blend the artistic traditions of Africa into new forms. A variety of his original designs are currently available only through Phases Africa in the U.S.

His works have made such an impression on fashion house Fendi that they commissioned the artist to produce some of his designs exclusively for their furniture stores. “When the Italians turn to Africa for design, you know we must be doing something right,” says owner Noleen Kutash.

    MANTA

Phases Africa presents a NEW contemporary line of Cowhide Rugs. Each rug is unique in color and design and there are no two pieces that look alike. They are constructed entirely by hand - first each piece of hide is cut then all the individual pieces are laid out to formulate a pattern. Stitch-holes are then punched around each component’s perimeter before they are crossed-hand-stitched together with waxed cotton thread. The individual pieces come in Mosaic as seen above (100mm2) or Pixel (50mm2). As well as Straight Cross (an example of this can be viewed on my website under “Skin and Hide”) 330mm across, or Petite Cross (150mm across) shapes. The results are rugs, which can be used as floor covering or wall décor that have the impact of a contemporary abstract painting.

Phases Africa Cowhide Furniture

Cowhide furniture, including occasional tables and low benches are also hand made for Phases Africa by local African artists and varies in design, size and price. No two pieces are alike.

Sourcing the goods for the Phases Africa collection is an ongoing quest for owner, Noleen Kutash. She is always searching for that “special piece” of unusual beauty, fine workmanship and materials of the highest quality. The result is a collection that combines a sophisticated contemporary design aesthetic with the organic and timeless beauty of Africa’s tribal and colonial legacy.
