"We are very excited
about the re-opening of The Dolder Grand, as the project
is one of the largest investments to date in the Swiss
hotel industry," said Managing Director Thomas Schmid.
"Every detail has been carefully addressed during the
renovation process, which has seen the hotel double in
size, from 20,000 square meters to 40,000 square meters.
Now with its exquisite refurbishment ready to debut, I
am privileged to have been a part of almost every aspect
in this landmark renovation and redesign."
The Dolder Grand was originally a "Curhaus" (health spa)
when it first opened in 1899 and was transformed into a
grand hotel in the early 20th century. Foster and
Partners and United Designers restored the grandeur of
the original hotel's historic Main Building with
innovations from modern architecture and added two new
wings: a Spa Wing and a Golf Wing. In keeping with the
Dolder Grand's original layout, guests will once again
enter the hotel from the south through the restored
Steinhalle.
United Designers shaped 173 new guest rooms including
four top suites into refined and eclectic configurations
that instill a sense of history while epitomizing the
modern age. The four top suites are individually
designed and appointed with unique furnishings. Each of
the top suites' décor are inspired by cultural icons of
the 20th century who also happened to be guests of the
former Dolder Hotel such as the Rolling Stones,
Giulietta Masina (wife of Italian director Federico
Fellini), "Maestro" Herbert von Karajan (conductor) and
Alberto Giacometti (Swiss sculptor).
With architecture by Foster and Partners, interior
design by United Designers and spa concept by Sylvia
Sepielli of SPAd, the new Dolder Grand Spa is 43,000
square feet of luxury, reflecting European and Japanese
influences for relaxation and enhancement of the body,
mind and spirit. Set in its own dedicated wing at The
Dolder Grand, the new spa features exclusive areas for
ladies and gentlemen, an Aqua Zone with a Bisazza mosaic
pool, a Snow Paradise room, distinctive workout,
movement and mind-body studios, and 19 treatment rooms
as well as two exclusive, over-the-top spa suites.
Two stylish new dining and drinking venues - Garden
Restaurant, The Restaurant and Bar - will be available
to hotel guests and interested public alike. Meanwhile,
terraces throughout The Dolder Grand afford magnificent
perspectives on the city of Zurich, its eponymous Lake,
and the towering Alps all around. Now topped with a
distinctive cupola, the hotel's Grand Ballroom will
offer one of the most eye-catching spots in the city for
celebrations, meetings and banqueting.
Before construction began, 70 geothermal probes, each
564 feet in length were buried underneath the foundation
of The Dolder Grand, drawing around one million kilowatt
hours of energy per year from the natural heat-storage
system in the earth. In summer, the probes will provide
comfortable cooling to all the rooms, while in winter,
warmth is drawn from the earth to supply heat. This
geothermal energy technology substantially reduces both
use of energy and heating costs, while renovation
increased the hotel's interior from 215,000 to 430,000
square-feet, total energy consumption has been cut in
half.
Starting rates at The Dolder Grand are from 850 CHF per
night/ double occupancy. For more information or to
secure reservations, please contact (800) 745-8883 or

Located in a unique position between the pulsating life
of Zurich and a naturally green zone, The Dolder Grand,
City Resort of Zurich since 1899, enjoys unrivalled
views of the city, the lake and the Alps. The hotel
features 173 luxurious rooms and suites in the fully
restored historic Main Building and in the new Spa and
Golf Wings; a 40,000 square foot Spa and first-class
cuisine in the two restaurants. Most eye-catching of the
banqueting facilities is the great ballroom, topped with
its unusual cupola. The hotel also features a pioneering
geo-thermal energy concept. The former Dolder Grand
Hotel closed for renovation in 2004.
