KNOXVILLE, Tenn., Feb. 13
/PRNewswire/ -- The nation's premiere interior design show is
back for a third season that's kicking off with a twist. From
12 p.m. ET, Monday, February 18 to 5 p.m. ET, Monday, March 3,
America can vote online once per day for their favorite
semi-finalist to join the HGTV Design Star juggernaut. After
receiving thousands of submissions from the most accomplished
and talented designers yet, Kimberly Lewis -- a 26-year-old
behind-the-scenes designer for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
in Los Angeles, Calif., and Stephanie Cook -- a 27-year-old
owner of Cal Coast Designs in Irvine, Calif., were selected by
HGTV to compete in the online vote. To cast a vote for
Kimberly or Stephanie, online users can go to www.HGTV.com/designstar
to see the semifinalists' bios, photos, audition videos and
slide shows of their design work. The lucky winner will then
join the show's cast, which includes professional architects,
interior designers, business owners and artists. The new
season of HGTV Design Star, hosted by Clive Pearse, premieres
on Sunday, June 8 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
"The high caliber of talent that applied for this season was
tremendous," said James Bolosh, vice president of HGTV event
programming. "Both Kimberly and Stephanie are so talented and
deserving of this opportunity that it became extremely
difficult to make a choice. So, we're leaving it up to America
to decide."
The Competition
Viewers can expect the most difficult design challenges yet
for the new group of finalists who dream of hosting their own
HGTV show. By the end of the competition, only two finalists
will remain to battle it out to become the next HGTV Design
Star.
During the competition, the finalists must deal with the real
demands of working on a weekly television show, including
mastering time and budget restrictions, a rigorous production
schedule and discriminating clients' needs. In addition to
showcasing their design talents and hosting abilities, each
finalist also must contend with the ever-present camera crews
following their every move.
The finalists already have overcome significant odds for the
chance to participate in HGTV's search for its next star.
Network executives and show producers culled through more than
2,000 essays, portfolios and videos to select those who
appeared to have the skills and "it" factor to compete in this
year's show. Thirty-eight semifinalists presented their work
in-person to the distinguished HGTV Design Star judging panel,
including designers Vern Yip and Cynthia Rowley and In Style
executive editor Martha McCully. The live presentations were
documented for the first episode, which will show how the
finalists managed to measure up to the exacting standards of
the judges and the network.
The Judges
Vern Yip is an award-winning architectural and interior
designer who gained national recognition transforming homes
and restaurants in his private design practice and on several
television series. Vern -- whose HGTV series, Deserving

line of top-quality products and has authored his own design
manual, Designing Spaces (Regan Books/Harper Collins, New
York).

Target, and is the author of Slim: A Fantasy Memoir (Rizzoli,
New York).
Martha McCully is executive editor of In Style Magazine. She
is a trend- watcher and style-maker, whose interest in home

section. She also co-authored a book on heart disease with her
father titled The Heart Revolution.
