Diamonds and Bars – The Art
of the Amish People
STUTTGART, GERMANY, May 3, 2007 /Arnoldsche Art Publishers/ --
Amish and avant-garde art? Sounds like a contradiction in
terms since the Amish are always associated with notions of an
old-fashioned, isolated and traditional community eschewing
anything that smacks of modernism. However, in the 19th
century the Amish were creating artefacts in the form of
quilts in such vibrant colours and stringent compositions that
they are – at least on the purely visual plane – astonishingly
close to the trendy Concrete art of the 1960s.
With the sumptuously designed
and illustrated catalogue Diamonds and Bars, ARNOLDSCHE Art
Publishers are accompanying the exhibition of the exceptional
Schlumberger Collection of Amish quilts at Die Neue Sammlung,
Munich, until June 2007, and from December 2007 to March 2008
at the ZKM, Karlsruhe.
