DACRON WRAP - wrapping foam cushions with a synthetic polyester layers for padding
DADO - decoration on the lower portion of an interior wall between the baseboard and the chair rail; section of a column pedestal above the base. See WAINSCOTING
DAMASK - reversible jacquard woven of linen, cotton, silk, rayon or blends creating a contrasting satin and matte surface, typically woven into floral motifs
DECK - to cover or trim with ornamentation; horizontal platform serving as a floor
DECO - streamlined designs depicting design motifs from the Art Deco Period
DECORATION - embellishment
DECORATIVE - embellishments added to a space or structure for enhancement
DECORATIVE GLASS - any glass application used for ornamental purposes, i.e. hand-blown glass, beveled, stained glass
DECORATOR - Our definition of an interior decorator is an individual with an interest and experience in residential decorating, but one who also lacks a formal education in interior design, which includes training in architecture, space planning, interior fixtures, furniture and finishes, lighting design, custom furniture and textile design, furniture and textile history, business ethics and standards, in conjunction with the ability to draft, execute floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, elevations, perspectives by hand or digitally for formal presentation
DECOUPAGE - artistic application of glue, paper cut-outs and varnish applied to the surface of any object
DEMISING WALL - any interior wall dividing one leased portion of a building from another
DENIER - unit of weight for the size of a single filament
DENIM - durable cottons or blends utilizing left-hand twilled fabric of hard twist yarns with colored warp and white filling yarns
DENTIL - rectangular or square blocks equally spaced along a piece of molding creating a "tooth" pattern
DEPTH - in design and drafting, the overall measurement from front to back of any object
DESIGN - execute artistic arrangements skillfully
DESIGN STYLE - the way in which design elements are brought together to create or express, which have become recognizable. See "DESIGN STYLES: ARCHITECTURE, INTERIORS & FURNISHINGS"
DESK - horizontal or slanted work surface with storage, most often 29-30" high
DHURRIE RUG - flat woven area rug from India
DIAGONAL CABINET - corner wall

DIMENSION - spatial qualities; height, width and thickness
DIMENSIONAL STABILITY - the ability of fabric to retain size and shape under various atmospheric conditions
DIMMER SWITCH - touch, slide or rotary switch to control electric light levels
DIRECT DYES - dyes needing no fixatives to adhere them to fabric
DIRECT GLUE DOWN CARPETING - gluing broadloom carpet directly to sub-floor without padding
DISABILITY - limited physical capability
DISTRESSED - finish technique creating an aged patina, uneven or worn appearance
DOBBY- a mechanical attachment on a loom for weaving geometric figures
DOBBY WEAVE - small symmetrical pattern repeats are formed by the adjustment of the harness attachment on a plain loom
DOME - round, vaulted interior ceiling; exterior roof construction. See CUPOLA, OCULUS
DOMICILE - home or abode, i.e. legal residence. See ABODE, APARTMENT, BUNGALOW, COTTAGE, DWELLING, FARMHOUSE, HOME, HOUSE, LOFT, MANOR, MANSION, RANCH HOUSE, STUDIO, VILLA
DONEGAL - fabric tweed with thick colored slubs, originally from Ireland
DOOR SURROUND - trim elements surrounding a doorway or cased opening, which can consist of pediments, pilasters or moldings
DOOR SWING - the direction a door operates relative to the hinge, i.e. swing right, swing left, swing in, swing out
DOORWAY - framed opening into a building or room
DORIC ORDER - one of five Greek classical column designs featuring smooth columns and an unadorned capital and base;
a subset of designs referred to as the "Classic Orders of Architecture" i.e. Doric Order, Ionic Order, Corinthian Order, Composite Order, Tuscan Order
DORMER WINDOW - vertical window projection set into a sloped roof
DOT - printed or woven designs featuring solid, circular spots of various sizes
DOTTED SWISS - sheer fabric of cottons or blends with a small dot pattern woven, printed or flocked on the surface
DOUBLE FACED - two layers of fabric sewn or bonded together, thereby becoming reversible and enabling different materials to be placed on each side
DOUBLE-HUNG WINDOW - window of two sashes operating to slide past one another in a wood track
DOVETAIL JOINT - furniture joinery technique of interlocking "V" shaped cut-outs
DOWEL - round wooden or metal pin used to reinforce furniture construction
DOWN LIGHT - light source facing down from ceiling
DOWN PROOF - tightly woven or coated fabrics used to prevent down feathers from penetrating surface
DRAFTING - hand drawn, "mechanical" drawings including cabinetry, elevations, floor plans, reflected ceiling plans and architectural details
DRAPE - supple fabric, which falls into folds easily
DRAPERIZING - a term coined for the decorating effects of Dorothy Draper, a successful interior decorator during the 1930's and 1940's
DRAPERY - decorative fabric panels hung flat, folded or pleated to create a finished window treatment, often lined on the backside to protect fabric from sun damage, improve insulation, provide privacy or reduce glare
DRAPERY HOOKS - metal hook with a sharp point on one end to pierce fabric, arched on the other to allow the panel to be hung
DRAPERY PANEL - single section of fabric, completely finished with header, hem and lining. See WINDOW TREATMENT
DRAPERY ROD - any rod used to support drapery treatment, i.e. iron rod, traverse rod, wood pole
DRAPERY TREATMENT - all decorative elements constructed to cover a window including blind, cornice, drapery panels, drapery rod, shade, sheers, tassels, valance, etc. See LAMBREQUIN, PASSEMENTERIE, PELMET, PORTIERES
DRAW DRAPERY - window treatment with pleated headings designed to operate on a traverse rod to open and close
DRAWER - wooden box, upper side open, with a handle, designed to be pulled out horizontally within cabinetry or free-standing furniture, i.e. dresser
DRESSER - horizontal cabinet composed of a series of drawers, designed to store clothing or personal items, which often has a companion mirror attached from the back. See BUREAU
DROP MATCH PATTERN - patterns where every other repeat (side to side) is dropped down one half of its length
DROP STITCH - stitch dropped from the weaving process to create open spaces
DRY - term used when fabric lacks moisture or natural lubrication
DRYING - final treatment of a washed fabric to insure softness and create a relaxed look
DUCK - durable, plain, closely woven fabric made of ply yarns in various weights and thread counts, i.e. canvas
DULL - fabric with no luster
DUPIONI - luxurious silk fabric with fibers from double cocoons offering excellent tensile strength
DUST RUFFLE - custom fabric bedding treatment applied between upper and lower mattress, touching the floor. See BED SKIRT
DUTCH DOOR - door split horizontally into two pieces, operating together or independently
DUVET COVER - fabric casing for a comforter
DWELLING - structure where you live. i.e. living quarters See ABODE, APARTMENT, BUNGALOW, COTTAGE, DOMICILE, FARMHOUSE, HOME, HOUSE, LOFT, MANOR, MANSION, RANCH HOUSE, STUDIO, VILLA
DYE BECK - large vat used for piece dying fabric
DYED - permanent color created by saturating fabric with man-made or natural dyes
