IIDA - International Interior Design Association
ILLUMINATE
- to enhance a space with light
ILLUMINATION - a source of light or decorative lighting
ILLUSTRATING - explaining by example
ILLUSTRATION - drawing, image or sample used to further explain
INCANDESCENT LIGHT - light from a conventional bulb, halogen bulb or heat lamp
INDIRECT LIGHTING - glare-free ambient lighting on ceiling, walls or floors, encased and hidden from view i.e. sconce, uplight, downlight
INDOOR AIR QUALITY - measuring the number of contaminates suspended in the air we breathe
INLAY - to set one material into the surface of another creating a decorative pattern
INSIDE MOUNT - installation of a window covering inside the window frame. See OUTSIDE MOUNT
INSPIRATION - creative thought, action or stimulus influencing a design
INTERFACING - stiff textile used on the underneath side of fabric to strengthen, add body or prevent stretching, available with a heat-activated adhesive, i.e. fusible layer
INTERIOR - inside a structure, building or room
INTERIOR DESIGN - the business of artistically decorating and furnishing the interior of any structure
INTERIOR DESIGNER -
Our definition of an interior designer is one who has attended a 4-year certified interior design program including training in architecture, facility management, space planning, interior fixtures, furniture, equipment specifications and finishes (FFE), furniture and textile history, custom millwork, furniture, product, lighting and textile design, cost estimation, field verification and surveys, project administration, programming, coordination, business ethics and standards and ADA compliance, in conjunction with the ability to draft, execute floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, elevations, perspectives by hand or digital CAD for formal presentation. In conjunction, experience under the supervision of a professional interior designer for a minimum of 3 years. We highly recommend certification by the National Council for Interior Design Qualifications to achieve the highest standard in the industry and membership in a variety of interior design professional associations.
INVERTED PLEAT - reversed box pleat with fullness turned inward
IONIC ORDER - one of five Roman classical column designs featuring a pair of volutes or opposing large scrolls on the capital, placed on top of tapered, fluted columns; a subset of designs referred to as the "Classic Orders of Architecture" i.e. Doric Order, Ionic Order, Corinthian Order, Composite Order, Tuscan Order
IRIDESCENT - opalescent luster
IRONWORK - decorative, hand-forged iron or cast iron grilles, screens, gates, grates, etc.
