WAINSCOTING - materials applied to the bottom third of an interior wall, i.e. bead board, paneling, chair rail molding
WALLCOVERING - flexible materials such as paper, vinyl, foil, fabric, felt, cork, carpet or veneers applied to a wall
WALL HANGING - a tapestry, needlepoint or bound fabric panel hung on the wall, typically suspended from an iron drapery rod and adorned with cording and tassels
WALLPAPER - pattern printed onto paper, which is adhered to the wall
WALLWASHING - glare-free ambient lighting installed at regular intervals around the ceiling or floor to evenly illuminate walls
WAND - mechanism used to tilt slats on a blind
WARDROBE - free-standing or built-in cabinet designed specifically to house clothing with hooks or rods
WARP or END - yarn in woven fabrics running lengthwise and parallel to the selvage, interwoven with the filling
WARP PRINT - when hand-weaving, a design is printed on warp threads woven with weft threads creating an impressionistic image
WASHED GOODS - fabric procedure using commercial washing machines to mimic a worn effect
WATERPROOF - to make any object impervious to water, i.e. lamination, polyurethane coating, sealer
WATERPROOFING - the act of applying a water resistant layer onto an object, to protect from water damage and promote longevity i.e. lamination
WEAVE/WOVEN - cloth created by using a loom and a combination of intersecting warp and filling threads, plain, twill, or satin
WEAVING - creating cloth by hand or with a loom, interlacing yarns to produce a woven cloth
WEFT or FILLING - threads running horizontally from selvage to selvage in fabric
WEIGHTS - individual units or pre-made tapes sewn into the hem of drapery panels or fabric vertical blinds
WELTING - fabric wrapped cording used to reinforce and embellish seams
WHITE WASH - white paint, thinly applied on a surface, giving an aged or weathered appearance
WHOLESALE - goods and services sold directly from the manufacturer
WIDOWS WALK - rooftop platform, said to have been created for widows seeking their husbands who had been lost at sea, often found on Victorian homes
WIDTH - in fabric this refers to one strip of material of any length; in design and drafting this refers to the overall measurement from left to right of any object
WILTON CARPET - Jacquard loom utilizing perforated cards to regulate the feed of colored yarn onto the carpet surface
WINDOW - glass opening or glass panel, typically framed in wood or metal, which may be fixed or operable to promote air circulation and allow in natural light
WINDOW COVERING - any decorative application to a window frame or pane of glass including blinds, cornices, draperies, window film, etc.
WINDOW FILM - thin layer of UV rated plastic, adhered to a window to reduce sun damage; thin layer of patterned plastic adhered to a window to create privacy and interest
WINDOWS - multiple glass enclosures. See WINDOW
WINDOW TREATMENT - any decorative application to a window frame or pane of glass, used interchangeably with the term window covering
WINDSOR CHAIR - spindle-backed, turned legged chair with a rush seat
WING-BACKED CHAIR - wing-shaped, high-back upholstered chair with upholstered arms and often with exposed carved Cabriole legs
WOOD FURNITURE - hand-crafted or manufactured case goods
WOODWORK - handmade cabinetry created from the wood
WOOL - woven fabric made from fleece or sheep fibers
WORK ORDER - signed document specifying work to be completed, including details and illustrations
WORK STATION - floor areas and furniture used by employees to perform their duties
WORK SURFACE - any surface designed for accomplishing a task. i.e. counter
WORSTED - long staple fibers, which have been combed to remove shorter fibers before being tightly twisted and woven
WRITING DESK - a cabinet or piece of furniture incorporating built-in drawers and slots for pens, letters, stationary, etc. See LAP DESK, SECRETARY
WROUGHT IRON - iron, which is heated, bent and hammered into shape by hand, i.e. hand-forged iron
